Interview Techniques

The interview is the part of the process where you get to show who you are and talk about what you can do for your potential employer. Never forget that you have been invited in because you look good on paper – now is the time to get the job by representing yourself in person.

9 times out of 10 an employer will have made their mind up about you within the first 5 minutes of the interview. Therefore first impressions are vital. The impression you create during the rest of the interview then depends on how well you are prepared.

Ensure that you:

1. Have researched the company you are going to

Speak to your consultant, they will be able to give you useful background information on the company. You can visit the companies website, check out the 'About Us' section to get an outline of the business

2. Have given yourself plenty of time to get to the interview

If possible do a 'dummy run' the night before. If you are less than 5 minutes early, you're late!

3. Are dressed appropriately
Gentlemen – a dark suit – recently dry cleaned

– A light shirt – no extravagant patterns
– A plain tie
– Black polished shoes and plain dark socks
– Make sure your hair is smart
– Keep jewellery to a minimum; no visible piercings!
– Do not wear too much aftershave
– No comical socks

Ladies – a dark business suit – recently dry cleaned

– A light shirt
– Dark polished shoes
– Make sure your hair is smart
– Do not wear excessive makeup, perfume or jewellery

4. Conduct yourself in a professional manner
If you are already seated when your interviewer arrives, stand up to greet them. A firm handshake is very important.

Maintain eye contact throughout the interview and show the interviewer that you are listening to what they are saying. A good listener is as good as a good talker.

5. Sell yourself
If you do not believe you are the best person for the job, the chances are the client won’t either. Make sure you answer the questions you have been asked and illustrate them with practical examples.

Do not be afraid to tell them that you want the role and have been impressed by it.

6. Remain positive throughout the interview
Even if you feel the interview is not going well or the job is not for you, remain positive! You may change your mind later in the day – give yourself the option to turn the position down.

7. Phone Venn Group
At the end of the interview it is really important that you give us a call and let us know how it went.
