Memory Walk - Alzheimer’s Society

So many charity challenges seem to be a race against time, where a certain level of fitness is needed before you can even start to think about raising money.

But the Alzheimer’s Society, the Venn Group-supported charity, is taking a different approach with its series of Memory Walks. These events are staged locally, on different days, at different times of the year. What’s common to them all is that everyone is welcome to take part, and the distances are not daunting. They might start at about 3km, which is only two miles.

These sponsored walks are for all ages and abilities to unite together to raise money to defeat dementia. The walks are spread across England, Wales and Northern Ireland and each walk will take on a different route through a city, woodlands or a park.

They do more than just raise money, too, helping to raise awareness of what the charity is doing to tackle the causes of dementia and help fund research into prevention and cure.

The word ‘dementia’ describes a set of symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. These changes are often small to start with, but for someone with dementia they have become severe enough to affect daily life. A person with dementia may also experience changes in their mood or behaviour.

Dementia is caused when the brain is damaged by diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease or a series of strokes. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, but not the only one. The specific symptoms that someone with dementia experiences will depend on the parts of the brain that are damaged and the disease that is causing the dementia.

If you want to help, you can register online by finding your local Memory Walk. Coming up soon in London is the daytime event on September 10, starting at 11am at the central field, HAC Grounds, Armoury House, City Road, London, EC1Y 2BQ. There are 3.5k and 9.5k walks.

There’s also a night walk on October 17, starting at 8pm, from North Park, Hopkin's Field, Waterden Road, E15 2EE. The distance will be between 4 and 6k. To find out more, to register for a walk, or even start one of your own, see the website: https://www.memorywalk.org.uk/
