Mental Health Awareness Week

Two weeks ago, one of our local government managers, Niki Holdich walked the Jubilee Walkway in support of her best friend fighting Bulimia and Anorexia Nervosa.

As it is Mental Health Awareness Week across the globe, we wanted to promote Niki’s fundraising and show our support to those suffering from mental and eating disorders, just like her friend.

Like most mental illnesses, eating disorders take complete control of your life; a lot of the time there is an average wait of up to six months for treatment. So many patients, much like Niki’s friend, go private as time is critical for those in need. The cost to be an inpatient starts from a whopping £700 per day. Therefore for a month of inpatient treatment, the cost is a minimum of £21,700.

Niki states:

‘…You can't put a price on living a happy and healthy life. I would like to raise a minimum of £2000 to help fund my friend’s treatment as she transitions from being an inpatient to a day patient and eventually an outpatient.

Before I found out about my friend’s illness, I have to admit that I had next to no knowledge of eating disorders and naively thought that it was an extreme desire to lose weight and be ‘thin’. How wrong was I? It has been truly heartbreaking to see someone we love go through such an ordeal…’
