Our senior recruitment consultant Sophie Powell continues her quest for world champion and brings home two medals from this weekend's championship.
“Last weekend I competed in the annual Kent Karate Open Championships (Lenham, Kent) as a representative of SKF Portway Karate Club. My first event was the Senior Grade Kata 15 years+. After a slightly wobbly start, I managed to make it to the semi-finals where I was narrowly beaten by one of my fellow SKF England Team Members. I ultimately finished 4th after losing the bronze medal match to a competitor who is on the England Squad with me.
In the individual fighting event, I won my first round comfortably 4-0 and eventually won the silver medal after losing 6-2 in the final.
The team fighting event was a mixed event where I teamed up with two of my male SKF England teammates. The first fight ended in a draw, so the pressure was on for me to win my round – and I did 5 points to 0. Then with a win in the final round we took home the gold medal!
I feel really positive after this event as I know where I need to focus, so I am excited for the next event on 2nd June, the SKF Portway Open Championships and with the world championships getting closer every match is chance to learn and pin point where I need to improve.
Thanks to SKF Kent Karate for organising such a fantastic event”.
