More Silverware for Sophie

On Saturday 16th March, I competed in the annual Shukokai Karate Federation (SKF) National Championships against competitors from across the country, including my fellow SKF England squad members. Over the course of the day I took part in four events, representing my local club SKF Portway: the Individual Adult Black Belt Kata, Individual Ladies Kumite, Adult Team Kata and Team Mixed Adults Kumite.

My first event of the day was the Adult Team Kata where my teammate, Brandon Taylor and I managed to secure a bronze medal after a very close competition, missing out on the final by just 1 point after re-performing our kata due to an initial tie. Next up was the Individual Kata event, where I finished 4th overall, conceding the bronze medal to my fellow SKF England Ladies teammate. I am really pleased with my performance in these events and feel I have made some significant improvements since last year’s National Championships.

The latter part of the day was focused on the kumite events, where I competed first in the Ladies Individual Kumite. Unfortunately, I underperformed on this occasion and lost my first fight, so was out of contention for any medals. In the Team Mixed Adults Kumite event, I managed to pick myself up and learn from my earlier mistakes. With the help of my teammates, Mark Slade and Matthew Anderson, we managed to secure a place in the final to compete against another team from SKF Portway. We ultimately lost in this match, but were thrilled to take home a silver medal in the event after some well fought contests in the earlier rounds.

I would like to thank Venn Group once again for agreeing to sponsor me for 2019 in preparation for the KSI European Championships in October. I would also like to thank my fellow teammates and SKF Portway and SKF England squad instructors for their continued support, coaching and advice. I’m looking forward to training and improving over the coming months and know the time will fly before my next competition, the SKF HQ Championships, in June.
