It’s that time of year where if you haven’t already booked your holiday, you’re in the midst of considering your options. Whether you want an all-inclusive beach break or a log cabin in the Alps, it’s one of the most exciting parts of the year.

I’m quickly realising that there is an art to planning your getaways. Luckily for us recruiters, we can generally get a bargain outside of peak season. It’s not a decision to be made in a rush, but the thought of having nothing booked can be agonising; especially when you spend weeks hearing about all the lovely places your regular contacts are jetting off to.

The process of organising the holiday usually goes as follows. You get the initial excitement of knowing you’re going away, followed by hours of searching for the right deal, then once you finally commit to one, you realise you’ve got a lot to sort out before you can jet off and relax – sound familiar?

Working in recruitment, the steps we follow can be quite closely compared to that of booking your break.

  • The Buzz
    You decide you’re going away, set on a week in the sun and the excitement starts to build. This is not dissimilar to the feeling when you receive a call from a client, asking for support in their recruitment.
  • The One
    Now the big question; where to go? There are many options to consider, and as with choosing a candidate to represent for a role, you need to make sure you settle on one that ticks all the boxes. Whether you find them at the very start of your search or later on, when you find the one you just know, and the excitement builds again.
  • The Vetting
    Even if your intuition tells you you’re on the right track, before you know it you’ve spent hours scanning through hundreds of reviews on Trip Advisor just to make sure you know exactly what you’re getting from your holiday. The same can be said for candidate compliance, with references taking the place of reviews.   • Confirmation
    Getting the highly anticipated confirmation email after hours of work is incredibly satisfying, regardless of whether it’s for your upcoming holiday or your candidate securing the position. All you need to do now is pack your sun cream or send out a contract!

You can put in a great deal of effort looking for your getaway, in search of perfection. While this can be exhausting and frustrating, once you arrive and take your place by the pool, I can guarantee you won’t mind so much. It’s the same with recruitment! Our fundamental goal as consultants is to place exceptional professionals into exciting and fulfilling roles, and it is incredibly rewarding to play a part in their career and watch them succeed.
