World Homeless Day

Today marks the ninth World Homeless Day, created to draw attention to the issues that homeless people face and encourage the community to do what they can to help.
Homelessness continues to be a critical issue, with recent statistics from the ONS showing an increase of 22% in the number of homeless people dying in England and Wales in 2018. This is the biggest annual increase since records began, so it is of more importance than ever to take action.
The magnitude of the issue was noticed by Venn Group employees at the end of last year, when they voted Shelter to be our charity of the year for 2019. Their investment in the cause has seen them throw themselves into a variety of fundraising activities, including sky dives, half-marathons, sponsored beard shaves and sweep stakes. We also held our annual charity day last month, which raised a monumental £9,690.19 for the charity.
However, there are many ways to help, no matter where you live, what your financial position is, or how much time you have. Shelter has an abundance of volunteering opportunities; these include administrative support, community-based roles, bucket collections and retail outlet assistance. These of course are in addition to activities such as bake sales, donations to Shelter shops and taking part in their challenge events like Sleep Walk, Urban Rush and Vertical Rush.
We can’t wait to announce our charity of the year fundraising total later this year. In the meantime, click here to read all about the different ways to support Shelter in their quest against homelessness and the housing crisis.
