Happy Diwali

We spoke to Sangita Trivedi and Taran Ruprai about their Diwali celebrations and what the Festival of Lights means to them.

As a celebration what does Diwali embody?

S: In Hinduism, Diwali symbolizes the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance". When Lord Ram fought and returned, celebrations of victory – there is always light over darkness, just have faith.  The festival is widely associated with Lakshmi, goddess of prosperity.

T: Alongside the Hindu celebration Diwali, the day is also celebrated by Sikhs as ‘Bandi Chor Divas’.This celebration ties in with Diwali and represents the same message as good over evil. Bandi Choe Divas is important to Sikhs as it represents and marks the celebration of freedom and independence when our 6th Guru was released from being wrongly imprisoned taking 52 princes with him. This day was celebrated by Sikhs lighting up the Golden Temple in candles and this tradition still continues today!

Do you have a year when your Diwali celebrations were particularly memorable/ special?

S: Each year is Special for Hindus.

T: Every year is special for us celebrating Diwali, as well as Bandi Chor Divas!

How will Covid affect your celebrations this year?

S: Family gatherings will not be granted to extended family, but many will have video calls and still enjoy the celebrations with their immediate family members. We will still make the festive foods (just in less quantity).

T: COVID19 has impacted our celebrations in the sense, we’re unable to visit out families this week to share traditional Indian sweets and are unable to gather together to celebrate, so it will just be my immediate family this year. In addition to this, my family and I may not be able to visit the Gurdwara (temple) on Diwali night to light candles as per the tradition – it just will not be the same as we will not be able to see our community together in full light!

Is there a learning for all from Diwali?

S: Never give up - there is always a light guiding you and giving inner strength.
