We are currently working with a Local Authority in the South West who are looking for two Planning Professionals to join their team, at a senior and junior level:
Job: Principal Planning Officer
Duration: 12 Months
Start date: ASAP
Rate: £53 per hour via Umbrella, Inside IR35
Site presence: Hybrid – 1 day per week on-site required
Role Details
- Process and prepare reports on planning applications, listed building applications, consultations, legal agreements, and appeals
- Provide planning and enforcement advice to applicants, developers, agents, and members of the public, while supporting positive development outcomes
- Liaise with internal teams, external agencies, and stakeholders, attending site visits, meetings, hearings, and inquiries where required
- Support service delivery by mentoring junior staff, contributing to system improvements, and assisting with the day-to-day management of planning applications
Requirements
- Experience or knowledge of development management, planning legislation, and development control processes
- Strong communication, negotiation, and report-writing skills, with the ability to present clear planning recommendations
- Ability to manage workloads effectively, meet deadlines, and work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders
- A proactive and flexible approach, with strong organisational, IT, and problem-solving skills

Role Details
- Manage a range of planning applications, prior approvals, and pre-application enquiries, preparing reports, recommendation letters, and appeal statements
- Provide planning advice to applicants, agents, and members of the public, and present applications at Planning Committee where required
- Work collaboratively with senior planners and team leaders to develop planning knowledge, support service delivery, and contribute to positive development outcomes
- Help identify creative and sustainable planning solutions that support housing, jobs, and infrastructure deliver
Requirements
- A degree in planning or a related discipline suitable for progression onto an RTPI-accredited course
- Strong communication, analytical, and report-writing skills, with the ability to manage workloads and meet deadlines
- A proactive and positive approach to problem-solving, with the ability to use initiative and think creatively
- Enthusiasm for developing a career in planning and working collaboratively within a supportive team environment
