Job Description

Head of Finance (COVID)

We have a unique opportunity for a Head of Finance to lead the provision of Financial Management across an assigned Directorate. The successful candidate will work with Directors and other senior staff to provide expert advice and to foster a culture of sound budgetary management within the organisation.

Please see below a snapshot of the main duties and responsibilities:

  • Ensure that all the Directorates’ activities, relevant financial and non-financial information can be identified, compiled, analysed, measured, interpreted and communicated so that management can evaluate the most appropriate and cost-effective use of resources
  • Prepare the Directorates’ annual financial plans, budgets and in year forecasts. Ensure that these are then adequately communicated to all Budget Holders in the Directorate and that they are monitored against actuals, advising managers of required actions
  • Prepare the monthly financial pack for the Directorate and individual packs for each main department if necessary. Including commentary to enable the Directors and other staff such as deputies, departmental leads and senior managers to carry out their financial responsibilities
  • To act as the Directorates’ primary financial source during significant and material contract negotiations with external bodies such as NHS Trusts, CCGs, Grant Awarding bodies and commercial entities

Person specification:

  • Qualified accountant with full CCAB membership of at least 7 years and at least 5 years post qualification experience in a senior management capacity
  • Financial Management expert with thorough understanding of management accounting principles and further specialist knowledge
  • Significant successful senior finance experience in a demanding, large, complex and multi-faceted work environment. Including significant experience at senior management level
  • Preferably the successful candidate should have experience from both outside and within the public sector, ideally within a science-based organisation
