VACANCY – Supported Housing Benefits Officer

Location:         West Bromwich (remote working)

Length:            FTC until Mar 2021

Hours:             37.5 hours per week

Pay:                 Negotiable dependent upon experience


Venn Group is currently recruiting for a Housing Benefits/Welfare Reform Officer to tackle complex housing benefit issues, on behalf of residents registered with a charitable organisation based in West Bromwich.


Responsibilities of the role:

  • Provide a comprehensive and accessible service relating to Benefits and Housing Needs including the assessment of Housing Benefit and related appeals; discretionary payments; welfare reform; the provision of housing advice; the Council's Housing Register

  • Assess, review or reconsider entitlement to Housing Benefit, Council Tax Support, Social Care financial assistance or concessionary travel, in accordance with the current legislation. Check submitted forms and documentation and where necessary request further evidence in order to determine customers Benefit entitlement

  • Liaise with Local Authorities regarding rent levels and individual Housing Benefit claims

  • Monitor and oversee the progress of claims and contacts with Local Authorities

  • Offering assistance to the Housing Management Team regarding tenancies and claims

  • Maintain a detailed knowledge of Housing Benefit legislation, Council Tax Reduction / Support, understanding of benefit subsidy issues and knowledge of other welfare benefits

  • Identify and take the necessary action with regards to overpayments of Housing Benefit in accordance with local Council policies and regulations, taking the appropriate recovery action, optimising income maximisation at all times

  • Accurately assess entitlement to Benefits and other forms of assistance by maintaining an extensive and up to date knowledge of the relevant IT systems, policy and procedures, regulations, case law and other associated welfare benefits


Essential experience/requirements:

  • Experience of using benefits IT systems coupled with up to date knowledge of Housing Benefit legislation

  • Understanding of the Supported Living sector

  • Solid understanding of Welfare Reform and proposed changes to the Supported Living funding

  • Full UK drivers’ license and access to own vehicle

  • Enhanced DBS certificate
