Commercial Lawyer
A rewarding opportunity has arisen within a large, well-established local authority legal service for a commercial lawyer to join a busy and collaborative team. Whether you are newly qualified or have up to around five years’ post-qualification experience, this role offers a genuine platform to develop your practice in public sector commercial law, with real support around you.
You’ll work on substantive, interesting matters from the outset — the kind of work that makes a tangible difference to the communities and public services the organisation serves.
The team
You’ll be part of a specialist Contracts and Commercial team embedded within a wider in-house legal service. The team works closely with procurement colleagues and internal stakeholders across the organisation, handling a broad range of commercial and governance matters.
It’s a supportive, down-to-earth environment. More experienced lawyers and principals are on hand to guide you, and there is a strong culture of collaboration and practical problem-solving. You won’t be left to sink or swim.
The role
You’ll carry your own caseload of commercial and procurement work, with appropriate supervision and support scaled to your level of experience. The work includes:
- Advising on UK public sector procurement law and strategy
- Drafting and negotiating commercial contracts, including ICT and construction
- Supporting local authority projects across a variety of practice areas
- Advising on governance, local government law and procedure
- Working on matters such as TUPE, partnership arrangements, waste contracts and academy transfers
- Developing your technical expertise in a structured and supportive environment
Who this role suits
- A newly qualified or junior solicitor, barrister or CILEX lawyer with a commercial or public law background
- Someone looking to build a public sector commercial practice with real depth and variety
- A confident communicator who enjoys working with non-legal colleagues and stakeholders
- Someone pragmatic, collaborative and keen to develop their career in a well-resourced in-house team
- Candidates with private practice experience who are looking to move in-house for the first time
Working arrangements and benefits
- Hybrid working with high levels of flexibility
- Local Government Pension Scheme
- 28.5 days annual leave, rising to 32.5 days after five years, plus bank holidays
- Family-friendly and flexible working policies
- Health and wellbeing support
- Travel and cycle benefits
