Interim Public Health Officer
Based in London, hybrid working
Length: 3 months initially
IR35 status: Inside
Rate: £225 per day via an umbrella company
The Public Health Officer will support the delivery of programmes that improve the health and wellbeing of local residents, reduce health inequalities, and strengthen the resilience of communities. Working across health improvement, health protection, and healthcare public health, the postholder will lead and contribute to projects, contract management, and partnership work that align with local and national priorities.
Key Responsibilities of the Interim Public Health Officer:
- Deliver and evaluate programmes that promote healthier lifestyles (e.g. smoking cessation, physical activity, NHS Health Checks) and address wider determinants such as housing, environment, and socio-economic factors
- Support population protection through vaccination, screening, and emergency preparedness, helping safeguard against communicable diseases and environmental risks
- Contribute to needs assessments, care pathway development, and commissioning, applying data and health economics to improve outcomes and equity
- Manage and monitor Public Health contracts (e.g. drug and alcohol, smoking cessation, sexual health, mental health), ensuring quality, value for money, and effective procurement
- Work with council teams, NHS, and community partners to deliver coordinated interventions and align public health with broader priorities such as climate change, housing, and community safety
Skills, experience and knowledge required of the Interim Public Health Officer:
- Experience in public health, health commissioning, or programme management
- Knowledge of health improvement, protection, and healthcare public health principles
- Previous experience in a similar role in a local authority
