A recent example comes from Pippa Landy, who used her volunteering day during a trip to Zanzibar. For Pippa, travelling isn’t just about sightseeing—it’s about giving back. Her research led her to a grassroots initiative tackling a major environmental issue: beach pollution.

Zanzibar’s stunning coastline faces a growing challenge with litter, especially in areas like Jambiani. While some beaches appear pristine, others are burdened by waste that threatens marine life and the livelihoods of local communities. That’s where “The 8 Beach Cleaners” come in, a small but passionate group working tirelessly to keep the shores clean.

Pippa spent the day with Abdallah, one of the last remaining members of the original eight. Together, they walked from South Jambiani to Paje, collecting rubbish along the way. In just seven hours, they made a visible difference and Pippa gained a deeper understanding of the environmental and social challenges faced by the community.

“Meeting Abdallah was incredibly humbling,” Pippa shared. “He spends hours a day walking the beach, picking up litter—rain or shine. He’s not paid. He does it out of love for his home and a commitment to protecting it.”

Abdallah’s dedication is a powerful reminder of how one person’s actions can ripple outward. His work not only preserves the natural beauty of Zanzibar but also supports the island’s tourism and the wellbeing of its residents.
