Assistant Engineer – Structures
Location: South West
Hours: 37 per week
Rate: £33 per hour via umbrella company
About the Role
We’re looking for a skilled Assistant Engineer to join a Local Authorities Structures Team on a temporary/contract basis. You’ll play a key role in managing and improving the Council portfolio of highway and open space structures, supporting essential work across inspection, assessment, design, project delivery and technical approvals.
What You’ll Be Doing
As part of the Structures Team, you will:

Assist with the design of strengthening, maintenance, improvements and new structures, applying current codes of practice and European standards

Support the inspection programme for existing structures, including participating in Principal and General Inspections

Prepare Approval in Principle documents in line with the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges

Help manage projects within the Council’s capital programme

Supervise works on road restraint systems and the construction of developer-promoted structures, ensuring compliance with designs and specifications

Contribute to the development of the team’s Quality Management processes and procedures

Provide guidance and supervision to junior team members

Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary environment, managing your own workload and meeting deadlines
Requirements
Essential:
-
Degree, HNC/HND, Level 5 VQ or equivalent in a civil engineering–related discipline

Post-qualification experience in the design, assessment and inspection of highway or open space structures

Working knowledge of the DMRB and MCHW
-
Experience inspecting structures under construction to ensure compliance

Ability to undertake structural design with supervision

Strong IT skills, ideally including: AMX, TEDDS, Superstress, Advance Design, Scale, AutoCAD, MapInfo and Microsoft Office

A full driving licence is required as travel to construction sites and other locations is part of the role
