Principal City Planner
Start: ASAP
Duration: 6 months initially subject to further extensions
Rate: Negotiable dependent on experience
Hybrid working: Hybrid Working Model – Onsite Visits will be required
We are currently working with an organisation who require the assistance of a Principal City Planner within Local Government based in the Midlands. You will work on a Multi-Phase Regeneration Project, where you will provide urban design and landscape guidance in support of the planning and development process, contributing to strategies, programmes and plans for the regeneration and enhancement of the City

Main duties and responsibilities:
- Provide advice and guidance and, where relevant, negotiate on projects, pre-application enquiries and planning submissions as requested by Planning Management staff and other groups
- Prepare spatial masterplans and Urban Design Guidance within the Council’s approved planning framework
- Prepare text, plans, drawings and illustrations for policy documents, design guidance, strategies, frameworks, briefs, reports to the Cabinet, Cabinet Members and Committees, leaflets and exhibitions
- Prepare urban design policies and other design guidance as required to support the planning process
- lead on site-specific projects/tasks in the preparation and implementation of local plans, design briefs and planning frameworks
- Develop contacts and liaise with external organisations to establish good working relationships and to share knowledge of good urban design practice
- Prepare and give evidence to Public Inquiries including provide expert design evidence, under cross examination, in support of the Council at Public Planning Inquiries
- Respond to requests for information from Members of the City Council, the general public, schools, voluntary organisations and the private sector including prepare and research publications
Specific projects will include:
- Postgraduate qualification in Urban Design or related subject and / or Degree(s) in Architecture, Town Planning, and Landscape Architecture
- Substantial experience of urban design in the planning field
- Proven track record of providing a lead role on complex planning or technical issues at a high technical level, and experience of the promotion of good urban design within large organisations
- Experience of representing the Council at Public Inquiries, Hearings etc
- Experience of databases and project management/monitoring
- Knowledge and understanding of national and local design and planning policies and guidance
- Ability to communicate clearly with key players in the public and private sectors, elected members, representatives of voluntary and community organisations, local employers and individuals.
