Interim Chief Accountant
Based in London, hybrid working & Inside IR35
Length: 3 months
We’re seeking an experienced Chief Accountant to streamline and deliver the Council’s final accounts process, implement a consolidated accounts model, and rebuild external audit assurance. You’ll manage the financial ledger, ensure VAT and tax compliance, oversee cashflows and reconciliations and lead the production of the annual Statement of Accounts.
Key Responsibilities of the Chief Accountant:
- Lead and streamline the Council’s final accounts process, including implementing a consolidated accounts model
- Rebuild external audit assurance and work closely with Valuations & Estates to address audit issues
- Manage the Council’s financial ledger across revenue, capital, balance sheet and cashflows
- Ensure VAT and tax compliance and oversee bank and cash reconciliations
- Lead production of the annual Statement of Accounts in line with accounting standards and statutory requirements
- Support senior finance leadership (Head of Corporate Finance, Director of Finance, S151 Officer) to ensure strong financial governance
- Work with MTFS, Revenue, and Strategic Finance teams to ensure accurate recording of income and grants
- Drive continuous improvement in technical accounting, including use of automation and technology
- Provide technical financial analysis, lead key financial projects, and deputise for the Head of Corporate Finance
- Manage, motivate and develop the technical accounting team
Skills, Experience and Knowledge required of the Chief Accountant:
- Qualified Accountant (CIPFA, CIMA, ACCA, ACA) with up-to-date Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
- Experience of team management including goal setting and performance review
- 5yrs experience in Local Government or comparable organisation
